Hey guys... i recently cracked my 16 inch ZBT crash(ugh)... and need to replace it right away. Being the huge ( iguess not as much as Steve or alotta you guys) Vinnie Fan, (and also i just like the sound) I wanted to get an A custom crash 17 inch.
However the A custom crashes are labled thin and my ZBT are medium thin.... my ZBT held up for a year and a half but will this be the case with my A custom? the thing is I play mostly rock but I hate how Z customs sound. Are the projection crashes good? I know Steve uses it but I was wondering what kind of a sound difference does it have?
i live in the middle of nowhere in Hawaii and have almost zero oppurtunity to sit and compare cymbals like at a music store. Please give me some advice. Thanks.

Hey GoMan! I think the best thing you can do with a ZBT is to crack it! just kidding...
I have 2 A Custom Brillant Crashes(16 and 18) and i love them... i don?t hit them too hard, but i came back recently for touring like 2 months and they are still flawless...

I've only had bad experiences with 17" crashes.
I find the 16's and 18's to be perfect, whereas the 17 is a bit odd.

I have a 17" A Custom which sounds like a dream. Although it's thin it hasn't broken during the 4 years I've used it. I'd really recommend you to buy one.

I have an eighteen, but I don't particularly like it. It's too bright, in my opinion. I like darker crashes. I have a regular A series medium-thin 16" crash, and I like that much better. I guess it's just personal preference.
As far as durability goes, I've had the eighteen for years and have pounded on it pretty hard, and it's fine. I think thicker cymbals crack easier because they don't have as much "give" as thinner ones.

I have a 17" A Custom Brilliant and I LOVE it. When I want to buy a new cymbal, I bring all my other ones alongside and start testing. I go by what I hear. I know the sound I am looking for ahead of time, that's what's driving me to go shop for one in the first place. Doesn't Zildjian's web site have sound samples available online? I think they used to...
Since you don't seem to have Drum Stores near you, kinda hard to know what you'll like by word of mouth alone. Maybe you could then go and visit the Zildjian Artists section and see what some of your favorite Rock drummers use, that would be a good start. And if you don't like what you end up buying, make sure the store will allow you to return or exchange it.

Unless your name is popeye any of the A customs 17"+ are gonna stand up to all but the most vicious of beatings. I have all of them from 15" thru to 19" and the bigger sizes get a thumping from me.
They stand up bro.

I only use A-Customs as crashes too. Anyone using the Hi-hats? any comments on those? i'm thinking about getting the 13" A-Custom Mastersounds hi-hat, that Vinnie is using. I've been playing 14" all my life, but a 1" lesser in size does sound pretty good for me. ( What's up with Vinnie emulating odd sizes from Tony? he used a 15" Hi-hat hehe ).

A's sound killer.
BUT...word of caution...Do NOT hit the A's / thins hard or if you are in strictly or exclusively a loud rock band.
